Needham’s Art in Bloom: A bit of our history

Needham’s Art in Bloom, now in its 16th year, was modeled after the annual spring Art in Bloom presented by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Beth Shalom Garden Club’s goal, inspired by Sue Kaplan and Allison Shapiro, was to organize a community event that would engage people of all ages, interests, and life experiences.

Garden club members are paired with artwork by talented Needham High School art students for floral interpretation.

Needham’s Art in Bloom continues to grow with the dedication of garden club members, Needham High School Fine Arts Department staff with faculty coordinator Maria Sartori, and the support from the participants of Needham and Kalmia garden clubs.

This event has earned several awards. Nationally, The Goldin Foundation for Excellence has recognized the annual exhibit with an Exemplary Project Award. In addition, it has been presented with Special Achievement and civic Public Relations awards from The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts.

Thank you to our committed sponsor Roche Bros. and to our Needham Public Library Coordinator Gay Ellen Dennett who has been with us since the early years.

What a wonderful demonstration of the talent in Needham. The student's work is impressive and thought-provoking. The Floral demonstrations are beautifully creative and inspiring. This is a lovely example of informal education combined with community spirit. Thank You!”

Outstanding! What a wonderful event. I have been to the MFA version and the quality of arrangements here are as good and sometimes better than what I've seen at the MFA.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Art in Bloom exhibit. My children (ages 6 & 8) were excited to see their babysitter's artwork on display. What a treat to have such an exhibit without having to go into Boston.

Needham is so fortunate to have such a dedicated group of teachers. They inspire so many students, which results in the high quality and diversity of artwork that makes Needham's Art in Bloom so popular. -Allison S.
